ANCIENT FATH FOR THE CHURCH'S FUTURE
ANCIENT FATH FOR THE CHURCH'S FUTURE

Details

Mark Husbands and Jeffrey P. Greenman bring together select essays from the 2007 Wheaton Theology Conference.
Ancient Faith for the Church's Future demonstrates the vitality and significance of the early church for contemporary Christian witness and practice. These fourteen essays provide for a significant evangelical ressourcement by considering the importance of the thought and practice of the patristic church especially for our
(1) interpreting Scripture,
(2) engaging in missional witness through hospitality, social justice and evangelism,
(3) renewing our worship and prayer,
(4) grasping afresh our salvation through Jesus Christ, and
(5) authentically engaging our surrounding culture.

Fresh and forward-looking, this book leads the way toward a deeply rooted church that points beyond contemporary evangelical accommodation to civil religion, privatism and enlightenment methodologies toward its true vocation to bear vital witness to God's present and coming kingdom.

CELTIC DEVOTIONSA Guide to Morning and Evening PrayerBy Calvin Mil
CELTIC DEVOTIONS
A Guide to Morning and Evening Prayer
By Calvin Mil

Details

Sunrise and sunset. Morning and evening. Waking and resting. Your days are busy and unknown: each contains unexpected moments of joy and pain, struggle and hope. The time between your rising and sleeping is new each day. The same was true for the Celts, though their lives looked different from yours. And in the midst of the uncertainty of days, they chose to meditate on truth, to draw near to the One who holds the sun and moon in his hands. Calvin Miller invites you to do the same in Celtic Devotions. This thirty-day guide provides morning and evening readings and prayers to help you establish a Word-centered rhythm in your days. Centered on Psalm 119, an important psalm in Celtic praise, and including quotations from classic Celtic works, this devotional will guide your thoughts from morning to evening, helping you rest in God's truth when you're awake and when you're sleeping.

CHIASMUS IN THE NEW TESTAMENTNils W. Lund
CHIASMUS IN THE NEW TESTAMENT
Nils W. Lund

Details

The late author, a pastor and educator in the Covenant Church, was former Dean of North Park Theological Seminary, where he served on the faculty from 1922 till his death. His Ph.D. from the University of Chicago Divinity School (conferred in 1941) culminated over thirty years of study on chiasmus.

One of the classic studies in form criticism that acknowledged the debt owed to Jewish patterns of speech and thought, Nils Lund's Chiasmus in the New Testament has had an impact upon the scholarly study of Scripture extending far beyond its original 1942 appearance. One virtually cannot read a commentary on a New Testament book without seeing some reference to "chiastic structure", "a chiasm", "chiasmus", "inverted parallelism", or an "A B C C' B' A' pattern".

Form criticism has changed drastically since the appearance of Martin Dibelius's From Tradition to Gospel. In some ways Chiasmus in the New Testament anticipated those evolutions and opened windows that allow us to understand the biblical text on its own terms.
Its enduring relevance to modern rhetorical and literary criticism makes its reappearance especially timely and welcome.

Choosing Your FaithBy Mark Mittelberg
Choosing Your Faith
By Mark Mittelberg

Details

Summary
In a world of spiritual options, people constantly tell us what to believe. Yet, while we hear these pleas, we’re already functioning with existing beliefs--even if they are beliefs by default. So how do we choose what to believe--especially in the area of faith? Do we need to choose? In Choosing Your Faith, Mark Mittelberg encourages us, as Socrates does, not to lead an unexamined life. He invites us to examine why we believe what we believe. This examination will resonate with Christians and seekers alike.

DO HARD THINGSBy Alex and Brett Harris
DO HARD THINGS
By Alex and Brett Harris

Details

The next generation stands on the brink of a "rebelution." With over 14 million hits to their website TheRebelution.com, Alex and Brett Harris are leading the charge in a growing movement of Christian young people who are rebelling against the low expectations of their culture by choosing to "do hard things" for the glory of God. Written when they were 18 years old, Do Hard Things is the Harris twins' revolutionary message in its purest and most compelling form, giving readers a tangible glimpse of what is possible for teens who actively resist cultural lies that limit their potential. Combating the idea of adolescence as a vacation from responsibility, the authors weave together biblical insights, history, and modern examples to redefine the teen years as the launching pad of life and map a clear trajectory for long-term fulfillment and eternal impact. Written by teens for teens, Do Hard Things is packed with humorous personal anecdotes, practical examples, and stories of real-life rebelutionaries in action. This rallying cry from the heart of revolution already in progress challenges the next generation to lay claim to a brighter future, starting today.

Do This In Remembrance Of MeMartha.L.Moore-Keish
Do This In Remembrance Of Me
Martha.L.Moore-Keish

Details

The Reformed tradition has often made doctrine the starting point for eucharistic theology. If people rightly understand doctrines about Christ and the church, they can rightly partake of the sacrament. Martha Moore-Keish seeks to counter that impulse. Instead, she places the Reformed tradition in conversation with liturgical theology and ritual theory, moving toward a fuller appreciation of the ritual dimension of the Eucharist. She upholds the contention of liturgical theologians that knowledge of God comes primarily through liturgy, and that the eucharist is, as Calvin portrayed it, a locus of God's activity. However, she also contends, liturgical theologies have not always attended closely to local practice. Moore-Keish cautions that we must not allow predetermined "meaning" to blind us to the "doing" of eucharist in local churches. "Do This in Remembrance of Me' is a thoughtful call to recover greater appreciation for the way in which relationships to God and one another are shaped by ritual action.

EZEKIEL, DANIEL. The Ancient Christian Com Series
EZEKIEL, DANIEL. The Ancient Christian Com Series

Details

The books of Ezekiel and Daniel are rich in imagery taken up afresh in the New Testament. Echoes of Ezekiel with its words of doom and promises of hope, the vision of a new temple and its scroll-eating prophet are especially apparent in the book of Revelation. Daniel is most notable in supplying terminology and imagery for Jesus of Nazareth's favored self-description as "Son of man," a phrase also found in Ezekiel and one which John the seer employs repeatedly in describing the exalted figure of his vision on the island of Patmos. The four beasts of Daniel find their counterparts in the lion, ox, man and eagle of Ezekiel and Revelation. It is no wonder these books, despite the difficulties in interpreting them, took hold on the imagination of the early church.

Over forty church fathers are cited in the commentary on Ezekiel, some of whom are here translated into English for the first time, but pride of place goes to four significant extant works: the homilies of Origen and Gregory the Great, and the commentaries of Jerome and Theodoret of Cyr, thus bridging East and West, North and South.

A similar array of fathers are found within the commentary on Daniel. Extensive comments derive from the works of Theodoret of Cyr, Hippolytus, Jerome and Isho'dad of Merv and provide a wealth of insight. Valuable commentary attributed to Ephrem the Syrian and John Chrysostom is also found here, though the authorship of these commentaries is indeed questioned. Michael Glerup and Kenneth Stevenson edit this collection.

FAITH COMES BY HEARINGEdited by Christopher W. Morgan
FAITH COMES BY HEARING
Edited by Christopher W. Morgan

Details

A Response to Inclusivism
What about those who have never heard?

The debate swirls and feelings run deep. What is the fate of the unevangelized? The traditional position--that apart from an explicit faith in Jesus no one is saved--seems to have fallen out of favor with many evangelicals. Here is a passionate but irenic response to the arguments of those who believe that the unevangelized can (or might) be saved apart from knowledge of Jesus Christ.

Building on the insights of others, nine scholars introduce readers, even those with little background, to the ongoing discussion. Key questions--Is general revelation sufficient? Are other religions salvific? Do holy pagans exist? Must faith be explicit? Is exclusivism unjust?--are probed and answered from a biblical, theological and historical perspective.

The book's positive thrust is summed up by editors Robert Peterson and Christopher Morgan : "God is passionately engaged in gathering people to know, love and worship him from every tribe, language, people and nation. And he has called us to join him on this mission."

I ONCE WAS LOSTBy Don Everts and Doug Schaupp
I ONCE WAS LOST
By Don Everts and Doug Schaupp

Details

How do people come to Jesus in today's postmodern culture? Not by a mechanical, linear process of cookie cutter conversions. Nor by a nebulous spiritual wandering that never culminates in decision and commitment.

Over the last decade, Don Everts and Doug Schaupp have listened to the stories of two thousand postmodern people who have come to follow Jesus. While their stories are diverse and varied, certain common themes emerge. Postmodern evangelism is a mysterious and organic process that nevertheless goes through discernible phases, as people cross thresholds from distrust to trust, from complacency to curiosity and from meandering to seeking.

Everts and Schaupp describe the factors that influence how people shift in their perspectives and become open to the Gospel. They provide practical tools to help people enter the kingdom, as well as guidelines for how new believers can live out their Christian faith.

ISRAEL'S NEW DISCIPLESBy Julie Fisher
ISRAEL'S NEW DISCIPLES
By Julie Fisher

Details

The stories of an emerging group of Jewish believers who realise their destiny is to be a light to the Gentiles. Ten years ago there were only a few hundred Jewish Christians in Israel. Today that figure is over 10,000 and the number is growing rapidly. Some of the leading Messianic believers are starting to look to the future and turn their attention to passages in the Bible that talk about the role of Israel in the future being a light to the world. A number of Jewish believers are emerging who are passionate, fearless evangelists.
The stories told in this book feature some of those who are turning their attention to the Arab world in particular. Who are these people? How are they going about their 'mission' and why are they so passionate to share their faith in the God of Israel with Arabs?

JUST SEX, IS IT EVER JUST SEX?By Guy Brandon
JUST SEX, IS IT EVER JUST SEX?
By Guy Brandon

Details

People today are hopelessly confused about sex. On the one hand, it is meant to be something special. On the other, it is casually dismissed as trivial - merely or 'just' sex.

Sex has also become a big issue for Christians. Faced with a barrage of messages from a sexually permissive environment and lacking a clear rationale for biblical teaching, many Christians are unsure of what they think. This book encourages us to consider whether the impact of our sexual relationships on others around us is fair, or just.

With conviction and pastoral sensitivity, Guy Brandon explains the strength and integrity of the Christian world-view of sex. In doing so, he also addresses the inconsistency and inadequacy of the prevailing idea that consent alone is enough to sanction a sexual relationship. Demonstrating the damage created by this approach he offers a better, more just way, which brings with it the promise of God's shalom.

LOVE ONE ANOTHERBy Gerld l Sittser
LOVE ONE ANOTHER
By Gerld l Sittser

Details

Love one another. It´s one of the greatest, simplest and most difficult commands Jesus gave. And when it comes to the church, sometimes it seems impossible.

How can we achieve unity within the diversity of the body of Christ? Gerald Sittser examines the "one another" statements throughout the New Testament to distill much- needed biblical wisdom for loving each other even in the midst of controversies and stalemates. Speaking from his own pastoral experience with the best and worst of church life, Sittser helps us understand more fully what the love Jesus commanded actually requires and shows us how to live it out-through struggle, servanthood, compromise and sacrifice.

NEW CONSPIRATORS, TEHBy Tom Sine
NEW CONSPIRATORS, TEH
By Tom Sine

Details

"If you have faith as small as a mustard seed," Jesus says in the Gospel of Matthew, "nothing will be impossible for you."

That sounds good, but does it work in a world where seeds are genetically altered by an impatient few and hard to come by for countless others? In a world where the gulf between the very rich and the profoundly poor is constantly growing, can a mustard-seed faith make any difference? And can such a little bit of faith be sustained in a world whose future is so uncertain on so many fronts?

Tom Sine says yes, and he has the audacity to try to prove it in his latest book. In The New Conspirators Tom surveys the landscape of creative Christianity, where streams of renewal are flowing freely from diverse sources:

The emerging church Contemporary monastic movements The missional church The mosaic movement

Individuals and communities of faith are coalescing in, and drawing energy from, these four streams to retrofit the church as it leads, serves and gives witness to the kingdom of God in the turbulent times facing us. Read the book and you´ll want to-and be prepared to-join God´s conspiracy to create a better future.
